Three-time Paralympian and world champion Tyler McGregor was in Echo Valley Provincial Park yesterday for his Sledge Skate of Hope cross-Canada tour.

McGregor has been traveling to every province in Canada to skate 42 km at a local rink on his sled.

The tour is a fundraiser for the Terry Fox Foundation with a goal of raising $100,000. Currently, the pot is sitting at over $43,700.

Saskatchewan was his sixth stop on the cross-country tour and he says it was an amazing experience.

“It was awesome. We got so lucky with the weather, it was such a beautiful sunny day. We had a great crowd out, a couple of schools, some local people so we couldn’t have asked for a better day,” says McGregor.

“The staff at Echo Valley, they were up bright and early making sure the ice was prepared and in terms of quality of ice, that’s probably the best that I’ve seen so far on my trip across Canada so I’m grateful for that. It was a great day.”

Tyler completed the 42 km with some breaks to mingle and recoup.

“It was about three and half hours and that’s including some breaks to speak with the local schools and to get out and stretch a little bit. I certainly cramp up sitting in a sled for that long. People come out and support so I think it’s important to give them your time,” says McGregor.

He’s now on his way to skate in Winnipeg Manitoba. Then, his final stops will be in Fredericton New Brunswick, P.E.I, and Ottawa, Ontario.
