A rainbow sidewalk will be greeting students, staff and visitors to Jack MacKenzie School in east Regina.
The rainbow with messages was painted onto the sidewalk with high quality paint and is intended to be a permanent part of it.
Principal Tracy Houk explains the meaning behind the rainbow.
“We have a GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) group here at the school and it’s led by staff,” said Houk. “But I would say overall our staff and students really are a welcoming community and we see the sidewalk as just a symbol of being welcoming to everyone regardless of how they present.”
She said they want every student, no matter who they are, to feel comfortable and safe at the school.
“We had several staff helping out that day and we have several students who are a part of that group who are supporters of the LGBTQ community,” she said.
Parents and community supporters, including trustee Ted Jeleta, were there to lend a hand as well.
