Another step has been taken to create an everlasting memory of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos.
The City of Humboldt recently applied for funding through the Federal and Provincial Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) which could cover up to 70 percent of the proposed $35 million tribute centre that the city along with the Broncos Memorial Committee are looking to build.
The tribute centre will honour the 2018 Humboldt Broncos along with providing valuable services to the community according to City Manager, Joe Day.
Among the features that will be inside of the tribute centre in Humboldt will be an additional ice surface, a tribute gallery, conference rooms, and spaces for physical therapy and fitness. The tribute centre would be attached to the Elgar Petersen Arena.
The Elgar Petersen Arena has been the only ice surface in Humboldt for over 25 years following the demolition of the Leo Parker Arena. Local minor hockey teams have relied on rinks in communities like Muenster, Bruno and Lanigan to hold practices and games for many years. Day says they have heard from local hockey teams for some quite time that a second ice surface is very much needed.
The tribute gallery will look to honour the 2018 Humboldt Broncos along with the support that followed the tragedy said Day. “There will be some very inspirational stories both from the lives of those who were lost, the survivors, and some of the stories that come out from the donations and the outpouring support in the days and weeks after the tragedy.”
It is expected to take four months for the city to hear back about the status of funding. The Broncos Memorial Committee and the city is hopeful to begin work on the facility shortly afterwards.
