The Saskatchewan government says the potash industry hit all time record highs last year, with production reaching 14.2 million tons.

As well, potash sales hit 7.6 billion dollars.

Potash is an important fertilizer for farmers in many parts of the world.

Energy and Resources minister Bronwyn Eyre says more than 30 billion dollars has been invested in potash mine expansions and new projects in trhe last 15 years.

Last August, BHP announced it will complete the Jansen potash mine for a total investment of 12 billion dollars, the single largest economic investment in Saskatchewan’s history.

The province has a goal of increasing the annual value of potash sales to 9 billion dollars, and says Saskatchewan is poised to reach the objective well before 2030.

Saskatchewan’s potash sector accounts for about 30 percent of world production, which comes from 10 mines operated by K plus S potash Canada, The Mosaic company and Nutrien.
