Following a consultation tour, Social Services and Housing critic Meara Conway has released a report on how to reduce poverty and provide affordable housing in Saskatchewan.
The NDP MLA for Regina Elphinstone-Centre visited cities including Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, North Battleford and Prince Albert.
Conway says the report has a set a goal to reduce poverty in Saskatchewan. “It provides an analysis of the current approach despite an undertaking from the Sask. Party government to reduce poverty in half by 2025 despite that undertaking we see an exasperation of poverty.”
The highlights of the report compiled by Conway includes
-Increase to income assistance rates, ensure shelter benefits are set based on existing rental market rates, and return to covering the actual cost of utilities for clients.
– Providing the Ministry of Social staff with the necessary tools needed to assist clients
– To simplify the process to access support
– To adopt a multi-ministry strategy including Justice, Health, Education and Social Services to implement a Housing First plan and implement supportive housing
The report is something that Conway is hoping will catch the attention of the Saskatchewan government and Social Services Minister Lori Carr. “I have sent her this report, I have asked to meet with me to discuss its contents and I hope that with this report we will see some action finally.”
