Sask. sets power consumption record thanks to recent extreme cold

Saskatchewan has set a new one-day power consumption record, thanks to the recent snap of extreme cold we’re experiencing.

SaskPower said the new record was set just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, when Saskatchewan homes used almost 3,900 megawatts of power.

That’s 76 megawatts, or enough to power 7,600 homes in the province, more than the previous record set during a cold snap on December 29th four years ago.

The power company has a few tips for customers to save on their bills during the cold weather, including turning down the thermostat when no one is home, and putting your vehicle’s block heater on a timer.

Meanwhile, the mercury is expected to dip to -33 C Thursday night, and -35 C on New Year’s Eve.
