StatsCan crop production report points to drought-reduced yields

The latest production estimates from StatsCan shows a significant drop in crop production this past year due to drought.

Wheat production dropped 48 percent to 21.7 million tons across Canada and 8.3 million tons in Saskatchewan.

Wheat yields averaged 26 bushels an acre in Saskatchewan, down 43 percent.

Canola production decreased 35 percent nationally to 12.6 million tons.

Drought pushed canola yields to the lowest level since 2007, averaging 25 bushels in Western Canada and 22 bushels an acre in Saskatchewan.

Prairie barley production fell 35 percent while oats dropped 43 percent due to drought.
