The FSIN executive is calling on the provincial government and the RCMP to ensure stricter enforcement of the recent amendments to the Trespass to Property Act.
Vice Chief Heather Bear says many First Nations are finding trespassers on their lands, but there is no enforcement.
She states that in her home community of Ochapowace First Nation, a public plea to media is what it took to have police investigate numerous trespassing complaints, and the RCMP didn’t show up until there was a gun involved.
Bear says corporations have been trespassing on traditional hunting lands and bands have had to set up roadblocks.
The Vice Chief says First Nations leadership must be at the table with the government and law enforcement to work together to prevent potentially tragic situations in the future.
