Local Spotlight: MELODNA

I first saw MELODNA perform at Regina Folk Festival a few years ago and was an instant fan! A true artist MELODNA has crafted two EP’s since stepping onto the music scene back in 2020, each with their own unique sound. Her 2nd EP “She” draws from her own music style and heritage to blend together elements of R&B, Afro-fusion and South African sounds. Now as she gets ready to release her 3rd EP “Oops!”, MELODNA is ready to showcase another side to her. The extended play will be her first rap project. It will feature her already released single, “LASSO”, which has been a striking entrance into the rap field for this young artist.

Her new track she’s been teasing on socials is set to be released December 21, 2024, and will be the 6th track on her upcoming project. Get an exclusive listen to MELODNA’s upcoming track, “Trigger” below!

Get to know MELODNA:

An artist she absolutely has to see live someday:

Frank Ocean. “Blond” is such a timeless creation, I can’t. I saw a video of him performing “nikes” live and was like, yup, I need to see that. I’ll also have to say Normani. Her visuals are so detail oriented, and her choreography is just.. perfection and her vocal constructs just take me away. She’s not even a top artist of mine but her evident work ethic in every single part of her artistry reminds me of missy elliot and I really respect artists like that.

Her favourite throwback movie!

The fighting temptations and Uptown girls!! Uptown girls was the first movie that was just mine, my dad got it for me on vhs as a gift and I watched it like 5x a day. Both are such classics.

Best hidden gem place in Regina?

Africa Jazz Lounge. I’m hungry just thinking about it. The owner is also so kind, check it out!

Artist or famous person she’d love to have lunch with and why?

Hmm, to be quite honest, I could kinda care less about that. I have my musical inspirations and such, but I’ve never really had a strong strong attachment to a famous person enough to want that, I just don’t know them.. And like..I’m super shy and awkward. Unless there was a cheque book..

Her favourite way to spend a Saturday!

After some Saturday cleaning, I love winding down under the blankies with a movie, forcing my child to snuggle. Or being absolutely unnecessarily loud and annoying together. There’s no in between.
