Summer 2024 is officially in the books with Autumn arriving early Sunday morning. There was a lot of memorable events that happened in the hot months of the year from sports, weather and viral moments. Let’s relive some of the best!
One of the biggest viral moments in the history of the internet has to be the “Hawk Tuah girl”. An average night out in Nashville turned into instant fame for Hailey Welch and the internet did it’s thing following the viral interview. There was a solid month where you couldn’t go on social media without every 3rd or 4th post being a hawk tuah meme.
It was a massive summer for sports in Canada. Just as it was kicking off, the Edmonton Oilers found themselves in the Stanley Cup Finals. Most of the country was cheering them on in the hopes a Canadian team could bring the cup north of the border for the first time since 1993. As we know, the Oilers fell just one game short, but created memories for younger and older generations. Oh, and how could we forget the Oilers fan that flashed the entire world. Sports make people do crazy things.
Summer 2024 saw the Olympics take place in Paris, France. Canada faired well, winning a total of 27 medals. 9 gold, 7 silver and 11 bronze. Gold was struck in the men’s 4×100 relay, swimming which saw Summer McIntosh win 3 gold medals. Canadians dropped the hammer at the summer games winning gold in both the men’s and women’s hammer throw. Break dancing made its Olympic debut in Paris and Phil Wizard won the first and maybe only gold in men’s breaking. Speaking of breaking, Ray Gun, the Australian break dancer went completely viral for her questionable routine. There will probably be a few Ray Gun Halloween themed costumes as a result.
Music wise, this summer a couple of songs ruled the airwaves. Shaboozey – A Bar Song (Tipsy) & Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen – I Had Some Help battled it out the past few months for the “Song of the Summer” with Billboard officially giving the title to the latter. It didn’t matter where you were, at some point in your day you heard one of these two songs.
Wildfires were a hot topic the past summer, one of the worst years for them. Our neighbours in Jasper especially being impacted. With the tourist town being devastated, Canadians stepped up in a big way with the Alberta Day of Caring. An Alberta province wide bottle drive and donations saw over $1.5 million being raised to help the residents of Jasper rebuild.
Weather spectacles also took centre stage over the course of the summer with some having our eyes to the sky. The Northern lights really seemed to be dancing in the night sky a lot over the summer and not once did I see them with my own eyes. It’s my own fault. We were also sweating a lot, at least once June was done.. It was actually the hottest summer globally on record. The sweat stains on my shirts will reflect that.
Summer 2024 is in the rearview now, the weather cooling, the leaves turning, days getting shorter. I’m not ready for it, but like clockwork, summer will be back, but not soon enough. See ya next year!
