Top 5 Tuesday: Best School Lunch Snacks

School is officially back in session now which means the lunch bags and boxes will be a part of the everyday routine. We all remember the school lunches and the possibility of them containing some absolute gems for snacks. The thrill of having these in your lunch as a kid not only gave you pure joy, but you could also use it as potential currency to trade for other lunch items. Here are my top 5 school lunch snacks:

  1. Lunchables. Hands down, no questions asked, the lunchable was the crème de la crème of all things school lunch related. Whether it was the pizza, or the turkey/ham and cheese with the crackers, or yes, even the hot dog lunchable your eyes lit up as you opened the lunch kit to see the holy grail knowing you could savour every bite or trade it away for a ton of other snacks. I never traded a lunchable and I don’t live with regret.

2. Dunkaroos. I’m talking about the OG dunkaroos, not whatever they are selling in stores now. Back in my school days, that little blue container of biscuits and icing was a top player in the school lunches. Easily a top 5 draft pick. I’m not sure what they did to ruin them now, but kids unfortunately will never know what the real dunkaroos had to offer.

3. Pizza Pops/Pockets. This may be a bit of wild card, but there were times when I took these quick and easy little pockets of molten lava to school instead of a sandwich. The school microwave took a bit of a hit at times, but sacrifices had to be made.

4. Soda-Licious Fruit Snacks. They probably contained ZERO fruit, but these pop bottle and mug shaped snacks are a true nostalgic lunch item. I can still taste the root beer flavoured ones and its a true tragedy they removed them from the shelves. RIP!

5. Hot Rods. Quick, easy and delicious. Hot rods are the Slim Jims of Canada, just without the cheese. I’m not sure what was in these skinny little meat sticks, and I don’t want to ever find out. It was a huge flex when you had the full size one too. I might have to buy a hot rod and see if they still taste the same.
