There are three provincial byelections set for Saskatchewan on August 10th.

Two of the contested ridings are in Regina; the third is Lumsden Morse, with all three being closely watched, with a full provincial election scheduled for the year.

Regina Walsh Acres is one of those ridings which will elect a new Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Four candidates have thrown their names into the running to be the contisentuency’s next MLA after the seat was left vacant earlier this year after the passing of Derek Meyers.

Nevin Markwat, Saskatchewan Party

“I am very grateful and excited for the opportunity to serve the community I grew up in,” Markwart said. “I look forward to meeting with the great people of Regina Walsh Acres on their doorsteps this summer and will be working hard to earn their vote.”

Markwart is ready to work alongside Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party team leading up to the by-election.

“I believe in Saskatchewan and its important place in the world going forward,” he said. “Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party have a strong plan to grow our economy, manage our finances and create more opportunities for people throughout our province.”

Growing up in Regina, Markwart pursued his hockey career at a young age, playing in the WHL with the Regina Pats and for 9-years in the NHL.

After retiring from hockey, Markwart went on to earn an MBA in Finance in 1994 and worked in the global investments management industry for over 25 years.

In 2019, he completed a Master of Science degree in Cybersecurity. Markwart is the Chief Information Security Officer with FutureVault, a cloud-based document management company.

Jared Clarke, Saskatchewan New Democratic Party

“I am so honoured to have earned the support of the many residents of Walsh Acres that came out tonight. I intend to immediately get to work earning the votes of the people of Walsh Acres,” said Clarke. “The time is now to listen to educators and parents about the state of our schools. Saskatchewan was once a nation leader in education, health care, and the economy, and together we can do that again.”

Clarke is an elementary school teacher, a biologist, and a father and has taught at an elementary school at Regina Public Schools for the last eight years, seeing the firsthand impacts of cuts to education and the lack of investment in our schools.

Clarke is also an avid birder and has been involved with conservation efforts at Wascana Centre and across the province, and is the field trip coordinator with Nature Regina.

Rose Buscholl, Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan

“Politics has always been a passion in my life; it is something I have always approached with great enthusiasm and vigour,” she said.

Buscholl’s start in politics started as an RM Councillor, where she served for five years until she resigned to finish her University degree. She got involved in Provincial politics in 2016 and has run in two general elections and now a by-election.

Outside of politics, Buscholl has a full-time job and is a proud mother of 3 and grandmother of 2. She is also a published writer, has written two movie scripts, and is working on the third.

“I have never been much of a sleeper, so I just fill those hours with things I love. It is better to keep busy than to sit idle; that is what keeps me young.”

During this campaign, Buscholl focuses on a “No One Left Behind” approach as she sees the struggles many people face and receives very little to no help from the government.

She looks forward to serving the residents of Regina Walsh Acres and being the voice in the Legislature that people need.

The final candidate running is Joseph Reynolds, Saskatchewan Green Party.
