With the beginning of the school year, SGI says slow and steady wins the As in school zones. It’s back to school zone speed limits for those communities who switch back to regular residential speeds over the summer.

SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy warns that getting caught speeding through a school zone, comes with a punishment worse than being sent to the principal’s office.
Going 20 km/h over the posted limit will cost you $310. When it comes to pedestrian safety, McMurchy recommends teaching kids to cross at crosswalks, and not jaywalk, and before stepping off the curb, make sure the driver has come to a complete stop.

McMurchy also reminds parents to be aware of any no parking signs and to be careful around school buses. He notes that fortunately collisions in school zones are rare, as the average per year in the province is under 10.
