Russian airstike on military training base in Ukraine kills 35

Local officials in western Ukraine say a Russian airstrike on a military training base that has hosted NATO drills killed at least 35 people and wounded 134.

The Sunday morning assault on the International Peacekeeping and Security Center brought the war in Ukraine about 15 miles from the border with Poland.

Canadian armed forces at one time trained Ukrainian troops at the base near Yavoriv. The Russians fired more than 30 missiles at the base, Lviv regional state administration spokesperson said. Some of those were shot down in the air by Ukrainian forces.

The strike followed Russian threats to target foreign weapon shipments that are helping Ukrainian fighters defend their country against Russia’s grinding invasion. This was the first attack near Lviv, which is the biggest city in Ukraine’s west.
