Sask Agriculture seeks more volunteer rural crop reporters

Every Thursday during the growing season, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture releases a weekly crop report.

Depending on the time of year, it provides information on seeding progress, insect issues, topsoil moisture conditions and of course harvest progress.

The crop report has been around since the 1970’s, and used to have one volunteer reporter in each of the province’s 296 RM’s.

Matt Struthers is an extension specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

That is not the case anymore and there are a growing number of vacancies.

He says 46 percent of rural municipalities are not covered.

He wants to provide the best possible information and is seeking volunteers.

Struthers says information contained in the crop report is read by many inside and outside of our provincial borders.

He says grain buyers from around the world look at the information.

Volunteer reports provide information online, by
fax or on the phone.

Anyone who is interested can reach out to the Ministry of Agriculture’s Ag Knowledge Centre in Moose Jaw.
