Construction season is officially underway in Regina.
The city announced on Monday that it is investing $112.6 million into construction projects during the 2021 season with improvements to transportation, water, wastewater and drainage in different areas of Regina.
Water, wastewater and drainage will cost $55 million. Residential road renewal work is set at $22.8 million, while $16.8 million is put aside for street infrastructure upgrades including arterial, collector and expressways.
While the majority of the projects will commence in the next few weeks, the announcement was marked by the start of the McCarthy Boulevard Infrastructure Improvements plan.
At a price tag of $7.9 million, the project will see a sewer renewal and bridge rehabilitation occur simultaneously this spring and summer. A road renewal between Dewdney Avenue and Fourth Avenue will happen in 2022.
“It combines three different projects into one. Through this collaboration, work will take place over two construction seasons instead of three,” stated Kim Onrait, executive director of citizen services with the city. “By combining these significant and complex projects, the City realizes substantial cost benefits and efficiencies.”
Three other major infrastructure investment projects will take place this season including:
- A $940,000 rehabilitation of Albert Street between Victoria Avenue and Sask. Drive;
- Rehabilitation of the Winnipeg Street overpass and modifications to interchange, which is $28.8 million over two years; and
- Year two of the three-year North Central community drainage project at $15 million.
Chris Warren, director of roadways and transportation, said this year will be one of their busiest since they have some carry forward projects from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and changes to the construction season.
“This will be more work being done this year. We have taken all sorts of steps required to ensure we are trying to minimize the impact to our residents and spread that work out across the city,” he explained.
One of those carry forward projects is the repair of the Winnipeg Street overpass.
Nearly 30 kilometres of residential roads will be upgraded and enhanced through the Residential Road Renewal Program including:
• Academy Park Road between Academy Road and Academy Road;
• Procter Place between Parliament Avenue and 25th Avenue – two-year project;
• Chisholm Road between Shannon Road and Grant Road – two-year project;
• 4th Avenue North between Garnet Street and Retallack Street; and
• Magee Crescent between Sangster Boulevard and Sangster Boulevard.
Wastewater, water and drainage infrastructure projects will see the relining of about 23 kilometres of wastewater pipe and relining almost 4.3 kilometres of small diameter watermains. Other work will include the 25th Avenue domestic trunk main relining and Ring Road drainage improvements.
As part of the city’s Transportation Master Plan, 4.5 kilometres will be added to Regina’s cycling network including along Pasqua Street between Parliament Avenue and Hill Avenue. Another two kilometres of multi-use pathways will be upgrades.
